"Although what Anastacia has is serious, she is very lucky," said her surgeon, Dr. Alexander Swistel. "Due to the aggressive nature of her cancer, she was months away from a more immediate life-threatening condition. However, her prognosis is good, as are her spirits, which figures into any patient's successful recovery."
DCIS is when cancerous changes occur in the cells lining the milk ducts, which carry milk to the nipple, but the breast cancer cells are completely contained within the ducts and have not spread to the surrounding breast tissue.
"My will, my faith, and my body have been challenged," said Anastacia. "But make no mistake, my heart is strong and my resolve to fight will never be broken."
Anastacia was released from the hospital after two days and she recuperated at home under the supervision of a private nurse. Radiation therapy has been recommended and Anastacia will begin the six-week process in the coming weeks, according to a statement issued by her publicist.
Anastacia also thanked all of her fans and supporters: "To all of the people that have reached out to wish me well, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. And in return, if there is anything that I've learned from this experience it is to get a mammogram early. Even if not covered by insurance, give up that pair of shoes, don't go out for that expensive dinner--get a mammogram."
